 The Aloha Taxi Gang came to town specifically to try to contribute two things to the Depoe Bay community: safer highways and a safe and affordable taxi / delivery / emergency gas and jump start service. Interestingly, however, in the process they have also become sort of the local 24-hour ‘Information, Please’ center of the area, as well … “And that’s okay!” says the gang. “If we can help, we’re happy to do it.”
Aloha Taxi gets calls requesting info like, “Who do I call for … (fill in the blank)?” “What’s the telephone number for …?” “What time does the … leave?” “What’s the name of … ?” “Where can I get a … ?” “Who is … ?” “Have you seen … ?” “How can I get connections to … ?” “Which restaurant serves … ?” and, of course, “How much would it cost to … ?” So far they’ve not been asked, “What time do they feed the whales?” That question seems to be reserved for the Chamber of Commerce volunteers! Perhaps their favorite was an early morning caller who said, “It’s dark and I can’t find my glasses, so would you please look up a number in the phone book for me?” … and they did. For two and a half years, Aloha provided 24/7/365 service. But health issues and gasoline prices have forced them to reduce their hours and adjust their prices somewhat. They no longer respond to calls between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., except for very specific situations such as travel and charter boat connections, transports to area hospital emergency rooms, disabled motorists or a ride to one’s job, when necessary. Aloha’s new rates officially took effect on August 15, 2006. They will, in many cases, benefit the passengers – especially those in Depoe Bay proper and for multiple passengers (over three) to a single destination. New rate charts will soon be available to local businesses (and to individuals, upon request).
